This annual award was instituted in 1996, and from 2002 – 2005 was sponsored by AstraZeneca (and known as the AstraZeneca Medal). From 2006- 2015, the award was again known as the ASTH Medal and between 2016 and 2023 it was known as the THANZ Medal. It is now known as the THANZ Claire McLintock Medal.
The award is intended for early to mid-career individuals working actively in clinical and laboratory research in the field of thrombosis and haemostasis. The award is judged on the basis of an oral presentation from a short list selected on abstract merit. The award winner receives the THANZ Claire McLintock Medal and a prize of A$2,000. In addition, there are two runner up awards of A$500 each.
The entrant must be aged ≤ 45 (on the closing day of Blood) or a clinician/scientist at an early stage in their career (within 10 years of completion of PhD or clinical sub-specialty training) and a member of THANZ
The entrant must be a clinician, nurse, scientist or technologist working actively in the field of thrombosis and haemostasis and must be the main author and presenter of the abstract.
Previous winners of the Medal and invited speakers are ineligible.
All eligible abstracts submitted via the Blod online portal will be considered for short-listing.
Applications will be judged, by a panel of experts drawn from the THANZ membership, on the basis of a) abstracts submitted for the annual meeting and b) an oral presentation. For those entrants submitting posters, there will be an opportunity to present their work to the judging panel. The winner will be announced at the Gala Dinner.
THANZ will award a prize for the best clinical, the best laboratory, and the best Anti-Coagulation Stewardship poster in the THANZ stream based on evaluation of the content and artwork. Judging will take place during the Conference and the winners announced at the Gala Dinner.
THANZ Travel Grant
THANZ offers a series of 6 travel grants each year to provide financial assistance to members to attend Blood, one is in memory of John Lloyd. The grants will be awarded to the authors of the top 6 abstracts submitted to the THANZ stream at Blood. Entrants must be financial members of THANZ and must apply for the grant during abstract submission. The Grants, of up to $1,500, are awarded in advance of the conference to assist with travel.
THANZ Werfen Travel Grant
This grant is open to financial members of the THANZ who are laboratory scientists and will be awarded to the author of the best abstract submitted to the THANZ stream at Blood. Entrants must apply for the grant during abstract submission. The award, of up to AU$3,000, will be made in advance of the conference to assist with registration to both events, travel and accommodation.
THANZ AHCDO Conference Grant
This grant is open to financial members of THANZ and will be awarded to the author of the best abstract in the bleeding disorders field submitted to the THANZ stream at Blood. Entrants must apply for the grant during abstract submission. The award, of up to AU$2,000, will be made in advance of the conference to assist with registration to both events, and travel and accommodation.
THANZ Non-Member International Travel Grant
This grant is open to non-members who actively work in the area of T&H in a country in Asia which meets the criteria for the ISTH’s Reach the World program (https://www.isth.org/page/rtwcountries). The grant, of up to $4,000, will be awarded to the author of the highest-ranking abstract submitted to the THANZ stream at Blood and will assist with registration, travel and accommodation. The recipient will also be invited to attend the THANZ Scientific Workshop.
THANZ Novartis Nurse & Pharmacist Grant
This grant is open to financial members of THANZ who are either nurses or pharmacists and will be awarded to the author of the best abstract submitted to the THANZ stream at Blood. Entrants must apply for the grant during abstract submission. The award, of up to AU$1,500, will be made in advance of the conference to assist with registration to both events, and travel and accommodation.
THANZ Young Investigator Award
This grant is open to financial members of the THANZ who are ≤35 or within 5 years of completion of PhD or sub-specialty training and will be awarded to the author of the best abstract submitted to the THANZ stream at Blood. Entrants must apply for the grant during abstract submission. The award, of up to AU$1,500, will be made in advance of the conference to assist with registration to both events, and travel and accommodation.
